Philosophy Is Not An Exclusive Club. It's For Anybody Who Questions Her Life And Her Place In The World.

Philosophy is, among other things...

  • An entry into the rich and diverse world of ideas and the philosophers behind them
  • The thrill of feeling your eyes quite literally light up as you suddenly grasp something that has previously eluded you
  • Actively reflecting upon things like friendship, caring, passion, justice, sorrow, trust, and our relationships to others, to activities, and the environment.

At our spa for the mind we teach philosophy through an activity, and activities through philosophy.
  • Our belief is that in creating a reciprocal relationship between these two often polarized fields, they enrich each other and make each other more accessible.
  • Our intention in twinning philosophy and activity is to encourage and nurture a reflective practice around those things we do.

We have named our school premises 'The Nurtury' to reflect women's support for each other in the area of learning.

Here is a taste of how we twin philosophy with an activity...

Our wwp scrapbooking weekend is aimed at those who are already scrapbooking, either in a group or on their own, and who are eager to get more out of an activity they already enjoy.

To this end, we build into a weekend of hands-on scrapbooking under the guidance of an experienced practitioner, a philosophical exploration of how stories linked to photographs and other memorabilia help us to probe our emotions, to explore our connections to others, and to tap into our fondnesses for past times and special places.  In particular, we  examine the fascinating concepts of nostalgia and memory.

Are you part of a scrapbooking group that would be interested in a weekend like this?  Are you looking for others with whom to share your passion for scrapbooking over the course of a weekend?  Or perhaps you are a quilter or a writer or a ... (the sky's the limit!) looking for this kind of unique learning experience for yourself or for your group.  If so, we would like to hear from you.   contact us

In addition to being educational, our life-enhancing philosophy embraces a number of epicurean pleasures...

Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher.  He founded a school of philosophy which - significant for its time - was welcoming to women and other 'non-citizens' of Athens.  According to Epicurus, an understanding of philosophy:
  • led to a more happy and peaceful life
  • liberated us from our pains and fears
  • helped us to find happiness in almost every situation
  • encouraged us to seek and find those pleasures that fulfil us, and make us feel replete.
His school was called 'The Garden.'  It was set amidst the natural beauty of trees, water and flora, and it was here that learning took place.

Taking inspiration from Epicurus, our main school building -
The Nurtury -  overlooks a private lake.  The entire property, which includes Loch Robin, Nan's Studio and The Treehouse, sits in the midst of twenty-two acres of birch, maple and pine trees.

Such an environment, we feel, is conducive to the kind of weekend learning experiences we seek to create for our budding philosophers.
